Take a water taxi on a misty morning across the water hyacinth filled lake and this island appears like a ghost. The entire island is a series of stairs lined with wonderful little shops, restaurants and stalls. It is stepping back in time since nothing much has changed here in hundreds of years. Vibrant colors, the statue at the apex of the island, the views and the butterfly fisherman on the lake are just surreal. You could easily spend the day here exploring.
I love walking and what a better place than the Isle of Janitzio, the place of no cars. Yes, no buses, cabs or vehicles. Take the boat from several locations around Lake Patzcuaro. I prefer the muelle (boat dock in Patzcuaro) and walk up hill to the best views of the Lake. If you feel adventuresome, talk a walk up the spiral staircase to the top of the statue for peep holes for viewing. Along the way on the interior walls is the life of Morelos is depicted in murals painted by Ramón Alba de la Canal and other great Mexican muralists. The boats operate daily and are a treat
