Meg's Problem Log, 3/31

Problem Log: Portfolio Website

March 31, 2016
Updated published work page with all new publications.
Need to revise bottom of home page with “Latest Work” options. Possibly make it update as I post on the blog automatically?
Solution: Can’t find a tool that auto-populates, did find a larger carousel that I thought had the ability, paid 12 dollars, no luck. Looks like I have to update it myself.
Look for examples of journalist blogs.
Blog of investigative journalist
Blog posts by Atlantic reporters, tagline is “First thoughts, running arguments, stories in progress”
A whole list of blogs created by journos
“100 best blogs for journalists”
Ideas:
Commentary or rehash of news topics
Updates on research or interviews
Tahoe-related news topics
Pop culture etc.
Books
Upcoming stories
New techniques
Data visualizations or blogs about how I’m using data

Problem: Tried to figure out if old blog was alright to link out to, or if it was too unprofessional/inconsistent with the other site.
Solution: Got feedback and confirmed my suspicion that it was sending a different message. Should start fresh and stay on the same platform.

Problem for next class: Change background of blog page only to black or dark grey.

Problem Log:
Created new headers for "Published Work" and "About Me" pages, attempting to resize to fit width of website. Found I was able to tinker with position, but resized in Photoshop to several magnitudes lower, with no change on the website.
Moved all stories from static "Published Work" page to blog-style "Published Work" page and deleted the former.

To do:

Use Google My maps for main map on site
Write new stories (Donner Tunnels, Crystal Bay Border)
  • Map of places visited with stars
  • Add thumbnails to Blog Posts
  • Improve front page
  • Tinker with layout of Photos Page
  • Add more people to the Crew page and their information.
Problems:
Was unable to set up thumbnails with blog posts so I made a separate page for articles. I built a man posting page that could lead to the articles in my new page.

The to-do list:

Homepage - different photo treatment
Less open space in header area
Journalism section - start with strongest pieces
Marketing section - make it Marketing and Multimedia , talk about sports webcasting
Fix illustration work, explain what logos were for
Include Resume and CV in Contact (also in navigation)

Mostly all the issues I've run into when developing my site have to do with the css customization feature within the wordpress website builder.

Looking through the source code is cumbersome.  Once reviewing div code, it's hard to find what css classes or attributes are manipulating the specific thing I'm trying to customize.  If i found the class or code I wish to customize, then its guessing and hoping I'm placing the correct syntax in the css field.   So, it's three very time consuming tasks to just manipulate one thing, like the header image size.

I tried placing or using a FTP patch to my websites source code into dreamweaver.  This lead me to find out that because I purchased my domain (server space) from wordpress.com, the ability to use dreamweaver is impossible.  If I purchased a domain from a different server space company and downloaded the wordpress hard drive software along with a wordpress template, then I could have uploaded wordpress plugins, widgets and templates into dreamweaver.  I'm trapped in the the wordpress online website builder for now.

Because of this entrapment, I've decided to find a template as close to as perfect to limit the amount of css customization I'll be doing.  I tested many templates to get to the best one I am now using.

Within the template, few problems have hindered me.  Minor things such as linking errors, and bad image sizing has been easily fixed using theme and page customization tools.  There is one thing I haven't figured out yet, and that's the immediate stretch of the header image of my site.  I choose to set the full image and when previewed there is always a stretch.  I think I'm going to have to play with css to fix this one.  I'll let you know how it goes!

Otherwise, I feel like I become quicker and more comfortable with wordpress everyday.

Difficulties Building the Website:

I have decided to use Wordpress as a template for building my website. When beginning the first steps of my Nav Bar I had trouble adding new sections. Also, I still have not solved the problem of figuring out how to center the Nav Bar.

Problem log

Tweak with homepage images
Solve commerce issues for Chilean pesos
Build out some blog posts
Refresh events page for Chilean events

We had problems with google embedded application on our website. We wanted to put the address of our shop which is located in Chile, for this we look in pages and obtain a google "key" which was of no use for this. What we did was open google map, location, then we go to the left side of the screen to the "share" button and click on Embed map which gives us the code to put on the website.

3/29/16
We transfer our worked to a new platform as Bootstrap was complicating us. Some webpages we looked into were Weebly, Prestashop, Squarespace, Wix, Magento and finally Shopily which we are currently using. It works with our e-commerce page and we can edit it far beyond what other platforms are capable of.

3/31/16
Today our main problem was to edit our logo and brand name using photoshop. The main problem was that the template has predetermined setting of its margins so if we made it bigger it would after the entirety of the page.

We tried various word templates until we found one that can be used "snow" from DaFont. This became the font for "Piren Boardshop"

4/5/16
We modified our home page photos by using photoshop to crop and resize them. Tried add the location google map into our page. We decided it was better to have it on the bottom of our page and resized it several time until we were satisfy with the look. We also started looking into how to create a cart for our buyers to get the products and pay off in Chilean Peso. So far we have found apps inside shopify that might allow this but we are still on the process of figuring it out.

Later on the day we figured out which paying platform we would be using, for this we go to settings and then payment. Then we click on "2checkout" which is available in Chile and created an account and activated the demo version. Our only problem would actually pay money to activate our account so we can test it out.

4/7/16
Today we had no problems, we did add more contents to the blog and products such as snowboard boots.

4/12/16
Today our trial ended and it closed the possibility to keep editing without paying. We bought the basic plan for 30 USD and after this we "open" the shop for everyone and tested the "cart. Arno bought a pair of skis with a "coupon" which we created and gave him a 10% discount saving him money and simulated a purchased.

Youtube Video of The Day - Nick

Because it's world poetry day, and I think this is funny.

Assignment for Tuesday (3/22)

Hi all – my apologies for not being in class today – I will be there on Thursday.

One note - you all did well on the midterm, congrats. I'll send the corrected versions to you later this week.

For today, I want you to work on two things:, which are due at the start of Thursday's class

1. For your websites, make sure you have your landing page completed – all text, navigation and images should be in place (you can still have some "placeholder" images that you're intending to replace with the "real" ones, but they should give a sense of what your "real" images should look like). Also, I want you to have one "second level" page built out in at least a draft form. This could be an "about us" page, or a secondary gallery page (say, "portrait photography."

WE ARE GOING TO BE LOOKING AT EVERYONE'S HOME PAGE, AND ONE SECOND-LEVEL PAGE, AT THE START OF THURSDAY'S CLASS, so we can get feedback - so we have to have something solid to respond to.

2. On this website, write a brief post that will be a start of your "problem log," detailing the sorts of things you've figured out at this point. Nick, for example, has figured out how to get into the CSS of his wordpress site, and adjust stylings in the header. For Arno and Octavio, they stated to use one bootstrap template, but then abandoned it for another, because the first one seemed to be too easy to "break" when they customized it.Your "problem log" will be a blog post that you add to as you work on your site, developing a list of all the obstacles you overcame, and how you over came them (with links to helpful references and tutorials sprinkled through them). It will work as a sort of database for the class - and for yourselves, so you don't have to re-fix any problems you fixed once. Give the blog title you name, with a colon, and POBLEM LOG, like so: JOHN SMITH: PROBLEM LOG. and give the post the "tag" "log" se we can sort through all of them easily.

Looking forward to seeing where your sites are at. I also wanted to pass along an opportunity that just crossed my desk - if you're interested in coding, the re is a local resource, Elevate Blue, that if offering coding bootcamps in Tahoe, and you can get SNC credit for the classes. There's a presentation they're making on campus this Thursday at 6:30 - I'd highly recommend checking out (especially Octavio). Here is there press release:
