Here's a paragraph from a story we'll be talking about today -- and creating some hyperlinks with, today or Thursday, as well:

I said out loud: I must flee. I sat up noiselessly, in a useless perfection of silence, as if Madden were already lying in wait for me. Something--perhaps the mere vain ostentation of proving my resources were nil--made me look through my pockets. I found what I knew I would find. The American watch, the nickel chain and the square coin, the key ring with the incriminating useless keys to Runeberg's apartment, the notebook, a letter which I resolved to destroy immediately (and which I did not destroy), a crown, two shillings and a few pence, the red and blue pencil, the handkerchief, the revolver with one bullet. Absurdly, I took it in my hand and weighed it in order to inspire courage within myself. Vaguely I thought that a pistol report can be heard at a great distance. In ten minutes my plan was perfected. The telephone book listed the name of the only person capable of transmitting the message; he lived in a suburb of Fenton, less than a half hour's train ride away.

Here's the wikipedia page for the story, which contains a link to the full text of it.

Lastly, here's a link on aligning elements - optional for you to look at (we will go into this more in depth at a future date):

HTML - basic definitions.

A basic HTML intro, from a great web design resource site, W3schools:

HTML elements:

Here is a battery of links that may be useful to you in the formatted poem, our first html-based assignment:

I want you to take a poem or song lyrics, and use text formatting to "design" the text in ways that emphasize properties of the poem/song (for instance, if there is a line that's very angry, perhaps the font is larger and red for that section). I want you to use at least six different text properties (color, font face, size, alignment, etc.) in the course of the poem/song.

Links to CSS text and font info:

The "span" tag (for modifying elements outside of "p" and "header" tags):

An online resource for getting the text of a poem:

And here, below, is some basic html text styling code – utilizing inline CSS – that I thought might be helpful as a "base file" for you to build your poem out of. Hopefully it gives an idea of some basic text-styling syntax (I'll break it down in class):

Download it here.

Caroline Coughlin

I’m Caroline, I’ve been coming to Tahoe all of my life but I only transferred to SNC in the fall of 2016. I love traveling and have spent a lot of my life on planes to new destinations because of my parent’s jobs; my dad is an airline captain and my mom is a travel agent. Thanks to them I know I want to be able to travel for my job or at least live abroad and work. This summer I will intern in New York and hope to make connections for future employment after I graduate next fall.

Home but far away

Just Another Run Away

As far as a name goes, Simon works just fine. I mean there's nothing special or unusul about it, it serves its purpose.

Being from somewhere else sounds more exciting than it actually is, and I wouldn't consider one place better than the other, just different. Although those dark streets of Stockholm, Sweden, sounds rather unpleasent in comparesing to the warmth of the west coast sun, having a bit of both simultaneously keeps my mind stimulated and my sources of inspiration spread widely.

Phealan Robinson

Hi, my name is Phealan. I'm a INTD major. I'm from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I chose to come to SNC because I used to live in Auburn so I'm pretty familiar with the area and for what Tahoe has to offer sport and view wise. My hobbies include motocross, skiing, hiking, and cars. I love being outdoors so SNC was the perfect school for me and I'm so glad to be living in such an amazing place.

"Be yourself because an original copy is worth more than a copy"

I am from Fortuna, California. I am a senior at Sierra Nevada College. My major is marketing and hope to graduate this year. I love to be adventurous and trying out different things I have never done before. I love spending time with family and friends and living life to the fullest.

My cousins and I made a video last year in Mexico. It is about a farm worker wanting to change jobs due to the lack of money. Instead of being a farmer, he wants to work as a business man. One of the farmers friends recommended him to a business man and instead of hiring him to work for his business, he hired him to work as a farmer slave at the business mans home farm.

Who am I?

Hello My name is,  Meiasha Gray

I am a Fine Arts Major,
I sometimes make work like this:

But I do other things too.
Music is also a passion of mine, I spend a great deal of time listening to it with my eyes close. I also spend a great deal of time imagining myself in a jazz band, tearing it up on a saxophone.
Oh well, maybe in my next life.
I try to get a lot of reading and writing done. The goal this semester is 20(very good) books. And by writing I mean poetry.
basically i'm a "usually," pretty relaxed thinker.

Unlike most of my fellow Tahonians I'm not that outdoorsy but that's not to say I don't enjoy a long bike ride or paddle boarding trip here and there. I was born in Detroit Michigan but I moved to Las Vegas at age 11, we never went camping.

helloooo everybody

Helllooooo fellow classmates :)

I'm Heidi Peinthor, a  senior at SNC majoring in marketing to pursue a creative career in the outerwear fashion industry.

I'm from Grass Valley, a small town in Northern California - not far from SNC - nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

I enjoy almost anything that involves being outside, from activities Lake Tahoe has to offer such as snowboarding, hiking and climbing to  traveling, surfing, free diving and chasing waterfalls (quite literally). I have always had an interest in fashion production, styling and photography. In 2012, I designed the above dress for a fashion production put on by O'Neill Women's and Teen Vogue magazine. I find my creativity entertaining ideas of how fashion ties in with functionality for the purposes of enjoying the outdoors.

Rachel Lightner

a little about Rachel Lightner

Growing up in southern Oregon, I found a comfort in tall trees and big mountains,
so I made the move to Lake Tahoe to pursue my passion for Journalism & Outdoor Leadership at Sierra Nevada College.

I have attended SNC from the start, and am excited to graduate in May and begin the endless journey that lies ahead, with hopes of following my dreams as a writer and educator of the outdoors.

All things outside.
Snowboard. Climb. Skate. Surf.
Explore.

Chick on the left

Hey, my name is Kela Killam and I'm the chick on the left. I'm from Maui, Hawai'i studying holistik sustainability at Sierra Nevada College. I view sustainability through 6 lenses: environmental, economic, political, social, cultural, and activism in the attempt to widen the scope and efficiency of global solutions and motivate ideas beyond current mainstream thought processes. I fight for the voices that are oppressed and the lives in danger as a result of capitalism. Nature is my church and tea > coffee. Nobody is better or worse, just different.

I'm from the hick but cute town of Gardnerville, NV, which is located in the valley of South Lake Tahoe. I made the move to North Lake Tahoe to attend SNC to pursue a career in marketing and will be graduating after the fall semester of this year!

Rhett Gause:

My name is Rhett Gause and I am a freelance media producer.

As a photojournalist, film maker, musician, and an artist I have always been driven by an unquenchable curiosity to explore and tell stories that are beneath the surface.  My passion for climbing, mountaineering, adventure, and exploration permeates my work around cultural, humanitarian, and environmental issues, a crossroads of fields that I truly believe needs critical thinking and heart.

I draw upon my own experiences in the field and have centered my work on the culture of those who live a life in the outdoors.  I myself live and have lived this way for a while now, at points living months out of a car and tent, and climbing everywhere from California to Colorado, Utah to Wyoming, and Maine to British Columbia working on my craft—always in pursuit of wide-open country.

After studying under Tony O’Brien, a proclaimed photojournalist, in his documentary program in Santa Fe, NM, I have made the move and am currently attending Sierra Nevada College for Digital Arts and Marketing for the purpose of honing in on my craft.

I am continuing to pursue these subjects with a daring passion and I am looking forward to larger objectives at home and abroad.

I´m a 21-year-old alpine skier from a small town in Sweden called Sundborn. If you don´t see me on the slopes or in school I´m out trying to capture the moments in between with my right eye pressed against my camera. Travel has always been a big part of my life and to capture my adventures has always been of great importance to me. Right now my adventure is being a psychology major here at Sierra Nevada College.

who am i

My name is Brian I attended school at SNC in 2010-13 and just returned to Tahoe from a 5 year break. I took some time off from school to make money and figure out what I want to do in life. Ive been spending my time chasing the seasons spending my winters in Park City, UT and my summers on the North Shore of Oahu. Words and pictures are of equal worth.

As a photographer, I capture the truth of the natural world. As a journalist, I tell the whole story. As a human being, I endeavor for what is right.

Erin Wilson

Hi my name is Erin!

Originally from New York, I have lived in Tahoe for the past two and a half years. I'm a new media journalism student with a minor in English at Sierra Nevada College, Lake Tahoe. With graduation right around the corner, I'm planning on landing an internship this summer in New York for marketing/public relations. I don't exactly know what I want to do professionally, so I'm hoping an internship will at least clear up what I don't want to do. I enjoy happy hours around the lake and taking pictures of food.

I am Luka Gobec

A 20-year-old alpine ski racer from Zagreb, Croatia. The best way to spend time with me is to play soccer and do something active. Definitely a morning person, but not available before the first coffee in the morning. It's been a great journey for me at Tahoe and it looks like it is only getting better! I am excited to be here and I look forward to new experiences each day.

Welcome – Spring 2018

Welcome to the blog for the web design class.

Be prepared, next class, to talk about why you like the website for a presentation of five to ten minutes. Write and print out an outline, which you will hand in on Thursday's class (this is not a full paper, but an outline you can refer to in your presentation). Talk about:

1. The design of the site

You should be able to describe the use of:
a) color
b) fonts
c) images
d) the general layout

How do each of these elements serve (or undermine) the purpose and content of the website? What is the emotional or design quality of each of these elements? For instance, a site designed for children might use colors that are bright, vivid, and friendly -- with a font that appears playful or toy-like.

2. The navigation of the site

How it the site organized? How do you get from place to place? Is the content on the site easily accessible? Are there different navigation schemes on different parts of the site, or is it consistent across the site?

3. The functionality of the site -- what the site "does."
